When to Extract a Tooth

Peak Dental - When to Extract a Tooth

When you’re suffering from tooth pain, knowing when to book a tooth extraction can be difficult to decide — after all, it’s never a fun decision to be faced with losing one or more of your natural teeth.

The good news is, no matter what measures you need to take, there are plenty of post-procedure options (such as a dental implant) that will help restore the look, feel and function of your natural smile.

Signs you might need a tooth extraction

Though your dentist will be able to recommend the best option for you after an examination, there are some common signs that you might need to get a tooth (or two) extracted.

These include:

  • Significant pain after a filling, crown or root canal treatment (typically for an extended period)

  • A badly damaged or infected tooth (from tooth decay, periodontal disease or trauma) that cannot be restored by a filling or crown procedure

  • Crowding or impacted teeth (such as wisdom teeth), causing pressure and risking tooth and jaw issues in the future

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, you should book an assessment appointment with your dentist.

Benefits of a tooth extraction

Though it’s not ideal to lose a tooth, there are a number of positives that come from removal, including:

  • Reducing harmful bacteria

  • Easing pain and (eventually) inflammation

  • Aligning your bite and alleviating pressure (in the case of crowded teeth)

Practice good hygiene and see your dentist sooner

While some tooth extraction procedures are unavoidable (such as in the case of impacted teeth or dental trauma), there are steps you can take to help protect yourself from the need for a tooth extraction.

These include:

  • Regular dental examinations and teeth cleanings

  • Practicing proper dental hygiene (brushing, flossing, rinsing with a fluoridated mouthwash)

  • Wearing a mouthguard during high-impact sports
