Braces vs. Invisalign – Which Treatment Is Right For You?
The days of obtrusive braces are over – for some.
While new teeth straightening techniques, like Invisalign, are a great option for those who want their teeth straightened without silver brackets hiding their smiles, they’re not for everyone. Some of our clients, especially those who are looking for a system for children, still opt to go with tried and true braces. Though money can be part of the decision, braces are not just a budget teeth straightener.
Depending on your orthodontic needs, budget and other factors, it’s important to choose the right method for you, or your child.
At Peak Dental we want you to have all the information you need before making the choice to invest in your smile. To help you decide we’ve included a rundown of the pros and cons of each, so that you can be sure the choice you make is the right one.

The Rundown on Braces
Braces have been around for decades, and have proven results across all kinds of difficult or subtle orthodontic problems. With braces, small metal or plastic brackets are glued to the teeth, then wired together. The wire is then tightened, sometimes in conjunction with a spring or rubber band, to slowly push teeth in a specific direction. Those with braces must visit the dentist about once a month to ensure the treatment is going well, and to have the wires tightened to align the teeth properly.
For clients with large gaps, or those who require vertical re-alignment, braces are the most effective solution. And, because braces work 24/7 without supervision, braces are often the simplest solution, requiring only a little extra attention when brushing.
Anyone who has ever had to wear braces as an elementary student can tell you the cons of braces. From their distinct appearance, to difficulty with chewing and mouth soreness, braces do come with their challenges. But, having a bright, straight smile is more than enough to convince many to deal with the temporary inconvenience.
Pros of Braces:
Can realign teeth faster in some cases
Cost-effective
More effective for complex issues
Works 24/7 without special attention
Now available in colours that can match the teeth or add fun colours to the mouth
Cons of Braces:
Requires dietary changes
Wires can cause discomfort
Are visually obvious
Can be problematic for athletes in rough sports

The Rundown on Invisalign Technology
Invisalign is the new kid on the block who’s trying to change the way we think about orthodontics. Invisalign utilizes near-invisible, plastic aligner trays to gently re-position teeth. Patients who opt for Invisalign must wear these trays for at least 22 hours a day. Every two weeks, these trays are swapped to realign teeth over the course of 6 to18 months. During this time, the user must remove the tray during eating, and brush their teeth and the tray before putting it back in place. Patients who use Invisalign must check in with their dentist every 4 to 6 weeks to ensure the treatment is going well.
For the right client, Invisalign offers invisible correction for your teeth. For those who’ve grown up avoiding braces just because of those glaring silver wires, Invisialign offers a way to get the smile you want without sacrificing beloved peanut butter and jam sandwiches, gum, or kissing a significant other who likewise has braces.
While they do seem to offer freedom from the traditional drawbacks of braces, Invisalign technology still carries drawbacks of its own – like paying thousands of dollars for aligner trays that rarely get used. For some parents, this may mean a few years of constant nagging to get your child to use their aligner tray. For others, it may simply become a habit and a regular part of life.
Pros:
Invisibly corrects teeth
More comfortable than braces
Does not affect your eating habits
Cons:
Requires dedication (need to remember to use it)
Often costs more
Trays may yellow or get discoloured if not properly taken care of
Must remove before drinking or eating
Does not work for all orthodontic problems
Consult with your dentist to see if Invisalign is right for you.
